UK tractor sales (over 50hp) in the first six months of 2008, at 9,267 units, were up 15.2% on the same period in 2007, according to the Agricultural Engineers' Association (AEA). If this momentum is maintained, it is possible that the year-end UK total could be the highest for a decade. The reasons for the sales boom have been well documented – increasing demand for food, reduced supply in some parts of the world due to poor harvests – although this buoyancy has to be set against the widespread current concern with the rising input costs of fuel and fertiliser.
