Poor wrapping and/or handling can dramatically reduce a silage/haylage bale’s value, according to Graham Robson, technical manager of wrap firm UAT. Mr Robson says that controlled tests had demonstrated that a six-layer covered bale retains almost all of its feed value when compared with a four-layer wrapped package. “The four-layer wrapped bales lost 9% of their feed value on average, effectively resulting in their feed value dropping by £1. Whereas the additional film layers of a six-layer wrap would have cost around 50p extra and increased the bale’s value by double that at least.”
