New to the John Deere literature stack is the 90-125hp 5R, which will start reaching UK and Irish farms later this year. Pegged as the premium model, we got our hands on one of the first 5125R models — to see where it sits.

Livestock farmers have been getting more and more tractor choice in recent years. Not just from new names, but the established players are also stretching their offering from ‘Billy basic’ all the way up to an increasingly refined package. It’s in the latter category that the new 5R sits in the Deere line-up.

Those with a good memory for Deere model numbering will recall this is not the first time we have seen a 5R badge adorn a green bonnet. The 5R range, along with the lower spec 5M, stemmed from the 5020 in 2008 and 2009 respectively. However, the premium version just didn’t hit the sales sweet spot, and three years ago was replaced by the Mannheim-built 6MC and 6RC, which used the same cab but on a heavier frame.

Still not quite happy about having all the bases covered, Deere decided to start from scratch with a new 5R, and first impressions are it has knocked this one out of the park. There are four models: 5090R (66kW/90hp
to 97/68EC), 5100R (74kW/100hp), 5115R (85kW/115hp) and the 5125R (92kW/125hp), which will be built in the States in Augusta where the 5M is also produced
