Nothing pocket-sized about a test that features four loaders all tipping the scales at more than 12t. In this first instalment of a two-parter, we explore lift heights, cycle speeds and power

Big wheeled loaders (aka loading shovels) are favourite with contractors and composting companies for their undisputed ability to shift a lot of material in a short space of time. We picked five for this comparison, of which four took the full test. To see what became of the fifth, check out ‘A Swedish mystery’.

Here are the four that made the cut:

■ JCB 434S Agri

■ Komatsu WA 250 PZ

■ Liebherr L 538 Z 2plus1

■ Terex TL 210

If you’re keen to see what happened, the test is summed up in two tables (measurements, p18 and load capacities, p20) while lift force graphs appear on p19. Otherwise here’s the bigger picture before we get into the more detailed test results.
