DRIVING IMPRESSION: Claas has worked with Liebherr to develop a telescopic boom for the 738 T Sinus loader. As far as the UK and Ireland are concerned, this could well be the most relevant model in the Torion line-up

The Sinus series is positioned between small and mid-range Torion shovels. The Sinus steering combines the 30° turn angle of the pivot-steer chassis with 25° on the steered rear axle utilising an Ackermann system. This feature was on the Torion 956 Sinus practical test machine that appeared back in the 4/2021 issue

On the 738 T, the hardware is the same, only slightly smaller. Booted up with 400/70 R20 tyres (2.09m overall width), Claas specified an outer turning circle of 7.14m (8.55m when measuring to the edge of the bucket) — a good start for those with tight yards to navigate. It’s just a pity that the steering system relies on a normal differential cylinder.

Rear end from the 644
The rear end of the 738 T is the same as the 644 fixed boom loader, with a 73hp, four cylinder Yanmar motor with a DOC and DPF to meet Stage V. That means no AdBlue, just a 90-litre diesel tank to top up. The engine works an automatic two-speed hydrostat.

We used the telescopic Torion to load a diet feeder and unload square bales; neither job truly challenged the engine and transmission, which proved very responsive with excellent modulation. The hydraulic system relies on a gear pump with a max flow of 93 litres/min at 230 bar. We got on well with cycle speeds and response. For just under £4,000, you can add a 30-litre/min auxiliary pump and a high flow fourth service.
