Driving impression: Case IH Puma 210 CVX and 225 CVX … with no steps at all. By the time you read this ‘drive’, Case IH will be shipping its Austrian-built Puma 210 CVX and Puma 225 CVX stepless tractors to the UK. The two newcomers benefit from a completely refreshed control system for their stepless transmissions along with a host of other changes to spec detail. James de Havilland reports on what potential buyers can expect

Refer back to our conventional Puma 210 powershift driving impression (profi 9/08). Surely the Puma 210 CVX and all new 225 CVX are pretty much the same, save for the insertion of a Case IH stepless transmission and an associated, subtly placed CVX badge for the bonnet.

Well, that’s about half right, as the powershift and stepless Puma tractors do have much in common. Yet, not surprisingly, once the CVX stepless transmission and its all-new controls are factored in, they do also feel very different to drive. And, taking the stepless Puma 210 CVX and powershift Puma 210 model comparison as an example, the 210 CVX’s £8,000 premium means there’s quite a difference in the price, too.

Confused by all the various terms – CVXs and Pumas, stepless and powershift box? Perhaps this summary will help:
■ CVX stepless (141-196hp)
■ Puma powershift (142-213hp)
■ Puma CVX stepless (213 and 224hp)
