Tractor test: It has taken a bit of time, but we’ve finally got our hands on a Claas Xerion for the profi tractor test. So, was the 308kW/419hp (ECE-R120) 4000 worth the wait?
Today’s Xerion is certainly a big lass. With the baby in the range now 419hp it needs to be — to get all those horses down to the ground. No doubt classic Xerion fans will miss the snazzy chrome stack that used to sit out front on the older models. But times move on. Today’s beast has a monstrous bonnet with a Merc OM470LA motor underneath.
Claimed to develop as much as 435hp from its 10.6-litre block, the engine sips from a 930-litre reservoir split between a 740-litre main and 190-litre optional tank. There is a 120-litre AdBlue tank to feed the SCR unit but no DPF or DOC needed for Stage IV. On the DLG dyno, the Xerion hit a profi test record with a whopping 1,900Nm of torque. To put that into context, the last time we tested a Claas Xerion back in 01/2006 the 3300 model produced 1,375Nm.
The good news continues with 265.5kW/356.1hp reaching the shaft at rated speed and 287.7kW/385.8hp at maximum power at just 1,500rpm. Combined with a torque rise of more than 42% (as speed drops just 26%) and a 139% drive-off torque, this performance ranks as very good.
