DRIVING IMPRESSION: For a few years Fendt 820 operators have had to look on in envy at the spacious cab fitted on the 900s and, more recently, the 800 SCR models. But now it’s the mid-sized tractors’ turn to enjoy a complete accommodation refurbishment along with several other new features, as we find out here while making a closer inspection of the new-generation 700s

IThe Vario 820 model has been a significant cornerstone in Fendt’s product range. Indeed you could say that it’s partially responsible for the growing customer trend of investing in relatively lightweight 200hp tractors for carrying out a mix of top- and draft work duties. Now, however, the old-style 820’s product life is on the cusp of completing its cycle, preparing to take its place in Fendt’s history books and make way for the newgeneration 185-240hp Vario 700s.

This new three-model 700 line-up should appeal to buyers who found the 800 SCRs just a bit too portly for their needs. Weighing 1.5t less, the 700 SCRs tiptoe onto the scales at 7.9t – yes, that’s still 700kg more than the tractors they replace, but there’s enough of a power increase and the same compact wheelbase is retained.

Providing the grunt is a TCD6.1L6 Deutz 6.06-litre motor, which has four-valves for each of its six pots along with common-rail injection and a turbocharger with electronic waste gate control. The headline grabber though, is these tractors sport an SCR unit that tucks into the wider exhaust stack and allows the 700s to meet Stage IIIB emission regs. The fuel tank has grown by 60 litres so it now holds 400 litres of diesel, and there’s a separate 38-litre tank for the AdBlue diesel exhaust fluid.
