Vario? Great gearbox; excellent on spud work; it can be made to ‘dance’ by the right operator. Yet despite these kinds of comments, the Fendt still has a reputation of being a one-man tractor, tricky for the novice to get to grips with. To address this criticism, the German tractor maker has introduced TMS on its all-new 800 Vario models, in an attempt to make the Fendt experience less intimidating.
It’s getting to be confusing in the Fendt mid-range. We now have two 800 model lines – an 800 Vario TMS, complete with proven Vario stepless
transmission, and the long-serving but still popular powershift Favorit 800 tractors (profi 03/02, page 24). Both 800 ranges slot in between the
700 and 900 Vario tractor models, with the all-new 800 Vario TMS, in horsepower terms, lining up as set out in the table below:
As on the 700 tractors, all three 800 TMS models are powered by Deutz BF6M 2013 engines, complete with modern four-valve technology and intercooling. From there it’s into a modified Vario ML160 transmission and the 700-based running gear. All relatively standard Fendt stuff.
Where this 800 range does differ, however, is that it comes with the tractor maker’s new TMS system (the Tractor Management System), electronic injection pump control and a joint/full engine and gearbox management package that enables the Fendt driver to tailor operating characteristics to his own particular liking or tractor driving style.
