Tractor test: New Holland T6040 Elite There’s plenty of choice within the four-cylinder New Holland T6000 tractor line – not just in terms of hp, but spec level, too, with the buyer able to pick from either Delta, LS, Plus or Elite. For this month’s tractor test we head straight to the top of the Basildon-built, four-pot pile and climb aboard the 89kW/ 121hp (ISO 14396) New Holland T6040 Elite model
Compact in build yet crammed with output potential, the New Holland T6040 Elite is typical of a modern breed of high-power four-cyl tractors. For pto work and haulage applications these machines have much to recommend them, and they’re steadily accumulating a considerable customer following in the marketplace.
A quick flick through to p15 confirms that the T6040’s trump is indeed its muscular powerplant, sourced from the Fiat Group’s Turin-based subsidiary, Fiat Powertrain Technologies. It boasts all of the customary spec that we’ve come to expect on a modern motor: four cylinders, 4.5 litres capacity, four valves per cylinder, common-rail injection, turbo and intercooler. Its rated output is a claimed 89kW/121hp (ISO 14396), whereas maximum power boosts output during pto work and transport work (13th gear and higher) up to a suggested 111kW/151hp. 150hp from a four-cyl, 5.5t tractor? Not so many years ago, such performance would have been considered beyond reach. Today, though, this technology is in demand and on offer from a number of manufacturers.
