Valmet turned demand for a 190hp model in its Mega range from a necessity into a virtue. The Finnish firm tuned-up its existing 118kW/160hp 8550 model and, with the addition of Sigma Power, changed it into the flagship 8750. This increases the power of the 118kW/160hp 8550 draft work horse into a powerful tractor that can also put out 140kW/190hp at the pto. In this test we find out how this extra 30hp is generated. At first glance, and even on close inspection, the Valmet 8750 appears to be a normal tractor that does not stand out from others in its sector. But a look at its specification reveals it provides ‘dual’ rated engine output and can deliver either 118kW/160hp or 140kW/190hp.

Valmet has used electronic control (Sigma Power) to provide 118kW for normal (draft) work, but it also enables the engine to generate 140kW only when extra power is required at the pto.

Consequently the company now offers one tractor that can produce 118kW for tractive power and 140kW for pto work. The tractor satisfies demand for the high pto powers required to operate a big power harrow/drill combination or a big baler, when tractive power is not a priority.

Valmet’s dual output trick provides the firm with a 190hp flagship that has two distinct advantages:

  • The Valmet 8750 is extremely light compared with other tractors in this power bracket. We recorded a kerb weight of 5,360kg while all the other 140kW competitors are between 1.8t to 3.5t heavier!
  • The Valmet 8750 comes at a much lower price than its competitors in the same bracket, saving buyers from £3,400 to £16,000 for the same pto power.

Although the tractor can deliver the same pto power as its heavier competitors, the 8750’s engine power in draft work will never exceed 118kW. The ‘real’ 140kW heavyweights can, however, transform their full engine output into tractive power. This was confirmed by our measurements taken at the DLG test station.
