Practical test: Fertiliser spreader control systems Within the past couple of issues we have assessed the performance of five fertiliser spreader models. To conclude, we focus attention on one element of these machines’ detail – their monitors, those little boxes of trickery that sit up front in the cabin. Are they a ‘must have’ or no more than a fancy add-on?

Does a modern control system improve upon a fertiliser spreader spread pattern? No. Which begs the question: Why invest all that extra money into what is undeniably an expensive option in the first place? For an answer, we need to look at what’s on offer. What does the box buyer get for his extra investment?

It is worth stressing from the outset that there is a wide range of control systems on the market, from the base ‘plus/minus’ setup – this enables onthe- move tweaks to an application rate at the touch of a key/button – right up to a flagship on-board weighing spec. The former base set-up type, which still requires electric control of the spreader hopper outlet, is perhaps surprisingly only offered by Sulky (MS tronic £850) and Vicon (Comfort Control £826).
