Welsh farm machinery specialist Emyr Evans has marked its 40th anniversary by giving the first new Massey Ferguson tractor it ever sold a fresh lease of life.

The Massey 3065, which represented the last of the manufacturer’s 3000 series of mid-range, multi-use models, was originally purchased in late December 1995 for delivery in the New Year.

“The tractor was sold to a farmer in Anglesey and has been working there ever since,” says director Berwyn Evans. “Due to the location by the Irish Sea, it needed some TLC but was still in working order. As the tractor is now 30 years old, it’s been a challenge tracking down replacement parts but a worthwhile one.”

The restored tractor is shod with Michelin AgriBib 2 tyres – 340/85 R24 (front) and 420/85 R34 (rear). Michelin’s agricultural tyre in the 1990s was the Bib’X M18. Comparing that at size 16.9 R34 with the equivalent AgriBib 2 now, underlines the huge transformation that has occurred since. While the Bib’X M18 was designed to carry a maximum load per tyre of 2,060kg at 40km/hr, the AgriBib 2 can carry 3,075kg per tyre at 40km/hr. An increase in carrying capacity of 1,015kg per tractor tyre over the last three decades.

Emyr Evans founded the business with wife Gwenda in 1986, initially trading in used tractors until becoming a Massey Ferguson dealership for the Isle of Anglesey and Gwynedd in 1996, operating from Gaerwen. In 2002 the area was extended to include the whole of North Wales up to the Cheshire border, and a second depot was opened at Denbigh.

The company has developed over the years with the addition of other agricultural franchises that include JCB, Fendt, McHale, Pöttinger and Bailey. Sons Gwynedd and Berwyn Evans run the business’s respective depots today.

The tractor was on show this week at Emyr Evans 40th anniversary open days at its Denbigh home on the Colomendy industrial estate. The tractor will soon join a collection of vintage Massey Ferguson tractors.
