With the increasing cost of tractors and fuel looking like it is not going to drop in price anytime soon, there is a growing interest in using trucks for farm haulage. One of several manufacturers targeting this segment in Germany with an off-road capable vehicle is Czech-based Tatra. On show at Agritechnica is their latest offering, the Phoenix.

Unlike many of its competitors, which modify an existing truck, Tatra uses its signature tubular chassis with each wheel having an independent swing arm so it remains in contact with the ground for a longer. It’s also a modular design so the 4×4 can become a 6×6 or even an 8×8 by adding another drive unit – it is a system it has used for decades.

The cab is sourced from DAF, the engine is either an 11.0l or 13.6l Pacer with 330 or 390kW respectively. The transmission is a 12-speed ZF and the model on show was fitted with 445 front and 600 rear tyres. Price for the pictured model is in the region of €190,000 and there is currently no UK distributor but there are units working here.
