The 3,812 new tractors registered in Italy in the first three months of this year is a quarter lower on the 5,083 units recorded from January to March in 2023.

Continuing a negative trend that began last year when the total Italian tractor market was down by nearly 13% to 17,613 units, FederUnacoma (the Italian manufacturers’ association) blames the demise on falling farm incomes, rising list prices and interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty.

It is not just tractors that were affected, and there was a substantial decline for all types of farm machinery in the first three months of this year. The volumes are smaller, but just 26 new combine harvesters were registered (down by nearly 57% on the 60 in the same three months of 2023), and the telehandler market, which has enjoyed strong growth in recent years, was also down.

The first signs of a demise were there last year when the total number of telehandlers registered in Italy fell by -3.4% to 1,141 units (40 fewer than in 2022). Registrations continued to slide in the first three months of this year, down by -37.2% to 236 machines (376 in the same three months of 2023).

Finally, the 1,800 new trailers registered in Italy from January to March is 6.1% lower than the 1,920 units recorded in the same three months a year ago.
