Kubota has entered the small square baler market with its new SSB (Small Square Baler) Series.

Unveiled at the National Farm Machinery show in Kentucky, the highlights of the two twin axle models; SSB2012 (31×46cm bales) and SSB2014 (36×46cm bales) are the patented dual-chamber design and single-row bale output.

What Kubota has essentially done is taken two traditional single chamber balers and welded them together. The clever part is the design of the intake rotor which separates the windrow into two small half-sized ones.

“We didn’t reinvent the wheel to make this product but we did make the wheel a little bit bigger,” comments product manager Cort Morris, adding that the SSB is a new opportunity for Kubota in the small square market.

By forming two bales simultaneously, Kubota reckons the baler will have twice the capacity as a machine that only makes one bale at a time. Also, unlike other double balers that create two rows of bales, the SSB aligns both chambers into a single row, to improve efficiency during loading and transport.

Designed for farms and contractors doing 50,000-100,000 bales a year, recommended tractor power requirement is around 120hp. The ISObus-compatible balers will be available this season in North America.
