Spanning 230hp to 305hp, the new Q series plugs an increasingly important gap in the Valtra line up between the T255 (235hp) and S274 (300hp). But just how Finnish is the new range of tractors?

Looking at the spec sheet you will see the engine is the Scandinavian 7.4-litre, six-cylinder block mated to the AGCO two range stepless transmission that is made in Germany. In fact, the mechanical underpinnings of the tractor are almost identical to the Massey 8S. So, they are the same but different, a reminiscent of when Saab got hold of the Vauxhall Vectra and created the 93. For instance, Valtra has added its Aires pneumatic front axle suspension system, apparently developed its own software and used a T-series style cab.

“The Q Series is a high-quality tractor with a capital Q and customers deserve an equally high-quality service. To ensure the best tractor experience we have introduced a certification programme for Q Series dealers”, comments Valtra sales director Matti Tiitinen.

As you can see there are five models in total with the smaller ones having a 20hp boost. Maximum power is available at 1,850rpm and max torque (1,000-1,280Nm at rated power) is in the 1,000 to 1,500rpm rev band.

The wheelbase is 55mm longer than the T-series and measures 3,050mm while it is said to tip the scales at 9,200kg with a 16 gross weight leading to a healthy 6,800kg payload. Max speed from the CVT only offering is 40 or 50km/hr – the beacons turning on automatically at 25km/hr and there are additional indicator lights in the cab roof. Just little details that along with the chunky aluminium steps show a nice engineering attention to detail, and that is before you look at the ‘Unlimited’ options to further tailor your tractor.

There is a choice of Technology Pro and Technology Pro precision farming packages for auto-steering, implement controls (variable rate, sections control) telemetry and documentation. All of the models have the SmartTouch display on the end of the multifunction armrest which swivels with the seat if you have specified the TwinTrac reverse drive option.

Production is set to start in September with the first units expected to reach the UK at the start of October but there will be a roadshow for an earlier look.
