‘Kit is getting too expensive’ is a common sentiment voiced by farmers and contractors, and this has opened the door for many non-mainstream players. On the Irish grass scene, one such relative newcomer is Samasz, which is being imported by Cork-based Egmont Agri
Last spring Samasz moved into a new €18m factory capable of turning raw metal into various grass machines. To give an idea of the scale involved, the firm today boasts a product line of over 300 machines — from mowers, tedders and rakes to snow ploughs and hedgecutters.
In farm machinery terms, however, the Polish firm is still relatively young. It was founded in 1984 by Antoni Stolarski, who started to manufacture a potato digging machine and by 1988 had made 288 of them, all sold in Poland. Yet the Samasz name is more synonymous with drum mowers, which it started making in 1986 as a result of a prompt from Mr Stolarski’s father. By 1994 the firm was producing over 1,400 of them per year, with Germany being the key export market where they were sold under the Fricke banner.
