USED MACHINERY: With the imminent arrival of Stage IV Case IH Puma tractors, used buyers may well be rubbing their hands at the prospect of falling residuals for the existing Stage IIIB and previous generation Stage IIIA models. We suggest this will not be the case, because the knock-on effect of new tractor price inflation is likely to see existing used values for nominal 165-225hp and 170–230hp SCR Puma models hold firm. Those who are not familiar with Case IH tractor nomenclature will benefit from a little bit of an outline to distinguish between the lower powered ‘short wheelbase’ SWB and the higher power ‘long wheelbase’ LWB Puma models that we’re about to focus on. So, here goes. First, the SWB range comprises three models that span a nominal 125 to 160hp. The original Stage IIIA compliant and subsequent Stage IIIB models from 2011 see the latter have a slight power hike with a corresponding change in model number. The original Puma 125, 140 and 155 line-up was thus renumbered 130, 145 and 160, these later tractors having easy to spot AdBlue tanks and a completely different exhaust system. All share the same family of 6.7-litre FPT engines.

The subject LWB range comprised Puma 165, 180, 195 and 210 full powershift models from launch in late 2007, with the Puma CVX 195, 210 and 225 with stepless transmissions arriving in 2009. The LWB tractors also moved to Stage IIIB ‘SCR’ AdBlue treatment in 2011, model numbers again changing to become Puma 170, 185, 200 and 215 for the powershift models; the CVX range also upped its numbers to CVX 170, 185, 200 and 215 with the range topped by the CVX 230. Again, all models share the same 6.7-litre six-cylinder engine. For brief outline detail, see our Case IH Puma tractor milestones panel on page 59.
