Claas Jaguar 890 self-propelled forager:Claas Jaguar 890 foragers have built up an enviable reputation over their product life cycle. Now superseded by the all-new 950 model, the 890 unit remains a solid, proven performer and, as a result, is a popular used purchase. So, what does the buyer need to look for when seeking out a second-hand example? James de Havilland investigates the options
If what follows reads rather more like a pre-season check than a used machinery article, please bear with us. On some bits of kit, a little history and spec detail can help in selecting the right model for the job. Which, after all, is the ultimate aim of this ‘used guide’ exercise. With a Jaguar 890, the best used machine is the one that will do what’s required of it for the target money. So, how is this determined?
It’s all about age and condition – much more so than spec – because the amount of wear and what needs replacing on a high output forager can have a major impact on how much the unit will eventually cost to operate. That said, one spec detail that is important right from the outset is if the unit is a standard 25km/hr or Speedstar 40km/hr machine. Claas introduced Speedstar models in late-2003, these featuring an uprated hydro drive pump for higher road speeds as well as a greater in-the-field lugging power – useful for those operators planning to pull a trailer in forage maize.
