Driving impression: Claas Quadrant 3400 big baler Shifting straw as quickly and efficiently as possible. That, according to Claas, is the Quadrant 3400’s entire raison d’être. This big baler pumps out 1.2m wide by 1.0m high crop packages at a staggering rate, as we found out when we operated one of the earlier 3400 examples last harvest

The Claas Quadrant 3400 is all about output. And despite the remarks within our 3400 introduction, this statement of
manufacturer intent applies to the packaging up of hay and silage just as much as it does to straw. To give an idea of what Claas is alluding to, the firm is suggesting a big 40% increase in output for the 3400 model over its smaller 2200 sibling, which itself is no crop-snaffling slouch.

So, the performance die is cast. Claas’s 40% hike figure is quite a claim, but how is it achieved? Up front, the 3400’s pick-up boasts the
familiar Claas double roller crop guard, a 2.20m working width (from tine to tine) and a hydraulic drive system that enables the pick-up and rotor to start in sequence. Main overload protection is incorporated within the hydraulic drive via a pressure control valve that effectively maintains the ‘tension’ until a crop blockage is removed – by lifting and lowering the pick-up unit, for example.
