PRACTICAL TEST: Claas introduced the Variant 485RC Pro two years ago to replace the Variant 385. We had the opportunity to run the baler in straw, hay and silage last season. Here is our report on the good, the bad … and a couple of items that could do with sorting

The Variant 485RC Pro is the top model in Claas’s variable-chamber baler range producing a 0.90m to 1.80m diameter package. For those happy enough with a 1.55m max diameter, there are the 460 and 465 in their various guises. Differing from its 385 predecessor, the 485 has a beefier driveline with 11/4in chain that it shares with the 465. Other modifications were made to the chassis and door hinges to improve durability, and a new net system was also added.

As this test was carried out in Germany, the test machine was fitted with a straight drawbar to work with a ladder hitch. An issue during the test was that the holed plate for setting the drawbar position failed to provide enough variation for bigger tractors, resulting in the geometry for the intake not being optimal and thus hampering the performance of the pick-up. Claas says it has addressed this issue by fitting an articulated drawbar for the 2019 season. Most UK and Irish balers will come with a low slung drawbar for working with a pick-up hitch.

Apart from the above points, coupling up to the baler is straightforward. The long drawbar does allow for tight turns. When in work you need to make sure you store away the chain that secures the pick-up; if you don’t, the driveshaft shield will have a much shorter life expectancy.
