Driving impression: It may be all-red today, yet the heritage of the current Case baler has passed through many hands – and many colours. First it sported the green/white of former East German giant, Fortschritt; then it donned the bright blue of Mengele, before finally arriving at its current hue, Case red. As well as these changes in dress code, there have been mods and updates to the design, as profi finds out The long

Built in Neustadt, Germany, the current Case IH big baler range comprises three models:

  • Case 530 – 70cm high by 80cm wide bale chamber
  • Case 540 – 70cm high by 120cm wide bale chamber
  • Case 550 – 85cm high by 120cm wide bale chamber

For our driving impression we operated the 540 IS tandem-axle baler, the IS logo representing an integrated 25-knife chopping rotor. Indeed the multi-knife chopper is the main option available on the mid 540 and flagship 550 machines; whereas the buyer of the entry-level 530 has to be content with the more conventional single axle and only has the option of a more basic four knife chopper. When specced with the 25-knife rotor cutting system, which gives a theoretical chop length of 45mm, the 540 is priced at £51,740; without the chopper, the machine price reduces to £48,560
