Similar to the 6m wide Multi-Seedbed Combination (MSC) launched in 2000, a 4m model joined the Kverneland stable earlier this year. In the spring we put peas and spring barley through this smaller MSC drill, equipped with cultivating discs and double-disc coulters

Modern cultivator drills are all about versatility – the capability to adapt to a range of working conditions. In this respect Kverneland’s MSC semi-mounted drill is certainly not short on options, the combination able to accommodate a wide range of tillage implements, including tines and discs, and an equally diverse assortment of coulters.

Among the seed placement options are either cast or ceramic Suffolk coulters, the CX steel/plastic double-disc coulter and the new heavier duty CX-Plus steel/plastic double-disc coulter. Most UK buyers are expected to go for the min till-oriented CX-Plus – larger diameter, stronger build, pressure up to 80kg/coulter – although, due to availability at the time, our test drill was fitted with an interim Horsch design. Since our test the Horsch coulter has been replaced on the MSC by the CX-Plus.

So, where to begin? Well, the front would seem as good a place as any. Coupling up to the tractor’s lower links, the narrow hitch turns 86° to allow tight headland turns. With our test 4m model and John Deere 7700 (110kW/150hp) tractor up front, for example, we were able to complete headland about-turns with no need to shunt.
