When Valtra Tractors launched its Valmet HiTech models at last year’s Smithfield Show, the ‘word’ was that they were the old tractors – plus a slick shuttle and fancy new badge. In reality, however, HiTech is much more than a simple shuttle upgrade, as Andrew Faulkner discovered

HiTech. Now there’s a name. The tag conjures up an image of state-of-the-art engineering, revolutionary research, technology at the cutting edge – or, in the minds of the masses, a pair of running shoes worn and promoted by basketball enigma Michael Jordan.

Still, what’s good for Nike and Mr Jordan is clearly now good for Valtra, too: The Finnish company recently adopted the HiTech label for its latest product launch, the eight-model tractor range which debuted at last year’s Smithfield Show. As an example of the breed, Valtra dispatched a mid line-up 8150 to Yorkshire for a profi drive.

First up, what is HiTech? Initial impressions are that it’s the Finns rather ‘over-egging’ the introduction of a new steering column-mounted shuttle. The reality, however, is somewhat different and more sophisticated. Closer inspection reveals HiTech to be a series of about 15 speed and temperature sensors scattered about the tractor.
