While the 724 and 720 may be Fendt’s bread-and-butter sellers in the UK, the bigger 828 and 939 models are not that far behind. So, having been suitably impressed by the fuel efficiency of the Stage IIIB engine 828 back in our 09/2011 issue, we were keen to see what the new Stage IV tractor could achieve.
If it wasn’t for those pesky and befuddling emission standards, along with their associated gubbins, it would be tricky to spot the difference between a Stage IIIB and Stage IV 206kW/280hp (ECE-R24) Fendt 828. Yet it would be wrong to dismiss this latest generation 800 range as mere fettling under the hood. There have been some subtle changes to solve irritations. To give just a taste of those tweaks, there’s now a 300° wiper; the compressor for the seat has been kicked into touch; and the Vario Terminal has received a facelift with a glass screen with backlit LEDS. As we said, little touches. But they are all aimed at refining what is often regarded as the Rolls Royce of tractor brands and justifying that much talked-about high price tag.
Pop the bonnet and it is hard to pick out the Deutz TTCD 6.1 L6 power plant, because it’s fairly well hidden behind all of the auxiliaries needed to make things tick. The six-cylinder, 6.1-litre motor gains a second turbo and an extra intercooler (air/water) with a separate cooling circuit including an electric
pump. Along with this you’ll find the familiar air/air intercooler and external EGR system, which is also cooled, plus a particulate filter. It is this DPF, working in conjunction with the SCR unit inside the exhaust stack, that makes the machine Stage IV compliant.
