USED MACHINERY: First introduced back in 1982, the Agribuggyhas developed considerably over the past 20years. As a used buy, even the earliest examplescan still make a sound purchase, with partsavailability making it feasible to ‘refurbish’ – as James de Havilland finds out

Around 800 Agribuggies have been sold in the UK, which is good news for those looking for a used example. In short, there are plenty about. Of equal importance, though, parts availability for these ‘simple’ self-propelled machines remains good, and refurbishing a tired model is well within the scope of most suitably equipped farm workshops.

The first Agribuggy was produced from 1982 to 1986. Introduced as a light, economical and very easily serviced self-propelled sprayer, it was powered by a BMC 1,100cc petrol engine and carried an 850-litre 12m boom sprayer on its platform. In 1986, the Agribuggy 2D was introduced, and realistically this model is now the entry-level used buy.

The 2D is powered by a non-turbo 53hp Ford 1,600cc diesel through a Ford five-speed transmission and Land Rover Series III axles. By late- 1988, the Agribuggy 3D model was introduced. This has a non-turbo 60hp Ford 1,800cc diesel with beefy Land Rover Defender axles, power steering and a 950-litre spray tank. Booms of up to 18m, in steel, were also available.

Next major change came with the 4D launch of 1992. The engine was upgraded to a Ford 1,800cc turbo diesel of 75hp, and it came with a much improved cooling package. The 4D retained a 950-litre spray tank capacity and most were sold with a 12m boom, although a 20m option was available. All the booms were again of steel construction.
