There’s a wide choice in the 2,000 litre capacity self-propelled sprayer market. A quick count-up at this year’s shows revealed a total of about ten different sprayers, from nearly as many different makers. Gem is a relative newcomer to the self-propelled market, but it has quickly made a big impression with its larger machine. More than 100 of its first ever self-propelled unit, the 3,000 litre capacity Sapphire, have been sold since its launch at the 1994 Smithfield Show.

But the Sapphire’s laden weight, at about 8.5t, was perceived by many farmers as too heavy. In May this year Gem answered that criticism with the Emerald.
