Driving impression: Hardi Alpha Plus sprayer … or do you have an unhindered view from the ‘bridge’ of your SP sprayer? Farmers this side of the Channel have never warmed to Europeanstyle front-engined machines preferring the UK forward-cab format. Could this change? Martin Rickatson tries Hardi’s new Alpha Plus
Certain design concepts take time to become widely accepted in the farm machinery world – if they take off at all. Nowhere does that hold more true than in the UK self propelled sprayer sector. While our mainland European counterparts prefer to sit up atop their big self propelleds, with engine out front, in the UK and Ireland the preference tends to be for forward-control units, with cab ‘hung’ off the front end and the sprayer’s engine just behind, over the front axle.
Hardi has had more success than most among the UK suppliers that have tested out the front-engined waters in the UK, its Alpha having sold in reasonable numbers during the past few seasons. Take a look back at our driving impression on that machine, though (profi 4/99), and you’ll see that this is a very different machine in stature. In its new incarnation as the Alpha Plus, Hardi’s range topper is now truly at home in the big league of self-propelled sprayers.
