Driving impression: Hardi ‘New Commander’ 3200 trailed sprayer … of popular sprayer opinion is how most observers would have classified an investment in a trailed machine not so many years ago, when self-propelled sales were on a considerable roll. But that market demand situation has now shifted in the UK, with the introduction of larger tanks and more sophisticated steering systems prompting a renewed interest in the trailed sprayer configuration. Here we operate Hardi’s Commander 3200 model

The same badging – but different. The previous Hardi trailed line-up was called the Commander, as is the current model featured here, albeit with a token ‘New’ at its head. Yet the reality is that these two machines actually share little, other than, of course, that Commander tag. For starters, the current model boasts a more modern, low-slung profile when compared with its predecessor’s (profi int 12/03) and, on top of that, there are a new steering system, operating controls and chemical induction hopper. Not the same at all, then. Running through all of the various items in closer detail, it makes sense to start at the front end.

As before, Hardi markets the full range of drawbar options, including the variant on our test European-spec Commander. What has changed, however, is that the previously removable park leg is replaced by a fold-up design, which is still robust but has the definite advantage of staying with the machine rather than being laid to one side. Most will be familiar, after all, with that feeling of coming back to the yard to uncouple, only to find that the all-important jack has mysteriously gone walkabout
