While rubber tracks are now a relatively familiar sight on combines, foragers and even chaser bins, until now they haven’t appeared on many other trailed bits of kit. But that looks set to change as Hawe Wester joins forces with Claas to develop a silage trailer with driven tracks

Best known for its monster chaser bins, Hawe Wester also builds a range of other trailed tackle including a line-up of walking-floor forage trailers up to 60mÑ capacity. Such luggers require appropriate running gear and, although the German firm offers a tri-axle variant, five years ago its engineering team decided it needed to look at alternative ways of spreading the load without massively increasing the drag exerted by wide, floatation rubber.
