DRIVING IMPRESSION: Köckerling has updated its range of ‘Classic’ Rebell disc harrows with a new coil spring design, allowing the discs to penetrate even the hardest of heavy soils. We tried out one of the prototype units
Drought-baked, impenetrable heavy land in 2019 proved a real challenge for short disc harrows. Köckerling’s solution is a more aggressive disc system for the Rebell, which will be particularly appealing to those on heavy soils. Last summer we had the opportunity to use one of the first four prototypes in wheat stubble … to see what the changes bring to the cultivation party. This is the first time Köckerling has abandoned its traditional leaf spring disc protection and replaced it with a coil spring design. These springs are tensioned to absorb up to 200kg, which should help the Rebell Classic to penetrate to a uniform depth.
Each leg pivots right under the frame, with the coil spring attached to the frame and leg with a sizeable clamp. Disc angle and pitch remain unchanged at 16° as do the distance between the two gangs (70cm), the 13cm between disc cuts and the disc diameter of 510mm. Working depth ranges from 2cm to 12cm.
In the field the Rebell Classic left a good finish in our rather flat field. We did notice the working depth decreased towards the wing extremities, but this was attributed to the folding rams needing more adjustment. The working width also needs to be corrected slightly: we were only tilling 7.58m rather than the claimed nominal width of 7.80m.
