Driving impression: Lemken Sirius 9/1900 sprayer Developed from scratch after tillage equipment specialist Lemken picked up European sprayer companies Jacoby and RTS in 2005, the Sirius first appeared three years ago. It might not be new, but this mounted machine puts high capacity and some interesting ideas into a modern-looking package.

Lemken typically turns to gemstones when it’s looking to name a new product. So how come it chose Sirius for a sprayer? With devastating Teutonic logic, of course. Stars and constellations hover above the ground; so do sprayers. Say no more.

Unlike the heavenly body, the agricultural Sirius comes in two forms: an entry-level 7 and the higher-spec 9. Both can mount booms from 12m up to 24m, leaving the major differences down to tank capacities (900, 1,300, 1,600 or 1,900 litres) and control sophistication. The Sirius 7 uses the more basic Easyspray controller, whereas the Sirius 9’s Spraydos (a Müller product) allows speed-related rate compensation and sequential boom section shut-off. Here we concentrate on the higher-spec Sirius 9 model.

Unusually for a 24m, 1,900-litre sprayer, the Sirius 9 is a tractor-mounted unit. This suggests that close implement/tractor coupling will be needed if the sprayer’s weight is to be kept as close to the back axle as possible. The trick is then to allow enough room for the Sirius operator still to marry the tractor and sprayer together, and on that score we’re pleased to report that Lemken’s QuickConnect system does a good job. So good, in fact, that it picked up a Silver Medal at last year’s Agritechnica show.
