DRIVING IMPRESSION: The Giga-Vitesse is the best-selling range in the Strautmann forage wagon family. For this season the Giga-Vitesse CFS 02 is both wider and slimmer — read on to see how these opposites work together

At first glance there doesn’t seem to be anything different on Strautmann’s new generation of 34-42m3 Giga-Vitesse forage wagons. Study them a little more closely, however, and you’ll notice the gauge wheels for the pick-up are now set using a pin and hole arrangement rather than the old crank handle that could occasionally give trouble.

Owners have been calling for a wider pick-up, and the solution from the design team is a 2.25m tine-to-tine wide unit that replaces the 2.03m crop gatherer. This wider width meant Strautmann had to update the entire driveline, which includes a new rotor for the Giga models. This is driven by a set of planetary gears that are integrated into the rotor and only then reduce the speed to prevent high torque loads from being transmitted to the rest of the driveline. The rotor is 2.10m wide and 840mm in diameter with an actual working width of 1.60m. The remaining 500mm are occupied by two integrated augers, with 6mm thick flights to bring the grass towards the rotor.
