Implements and trailers are often pulled by high-power tractors with maybe more muscle than is required for the majority of conditions encountered. It is only in wet field conditions or hilly terrain when the
full capacity of the tractor is utilised. If the trailer or implement has a driven axle it could potentially be hauled by a smaller tractor, even in such difficult conditions. Selectable drive on a trailer or implement would allow the operator to bring another driven axle or axles into play and provide extra traction and stability.

Hydraulically driven axles on trailers are a useful addition on challenging terrain. Popular in mountainous regions, driven axles provide both an increased element of control and safety, while also delivering improved traction in wet or tough soil conditions.
