The UK’s Zetor dealers could be forgiven for rubbing their collective hands in anticipation of better times ahead. For it is when farming incomes are put under pressure that the relatively lower priced Czech-built tractors and their ilk seem to sell well. So, what can the first-time buyer of a Zetor mid-ranger expect? We put the firm’s 8540 model (59kW/80hp) through the profi test.

The Zetor UR3 Series has long since served its on-farm apprenticeship, so those new to the brand should draw comfort from the many hours already clocked.

First introduced back in 1992, the tractor debuted in the shape of the 67.5kW/92hp 9540 model. A smaller 59kW/80hp 8540 model quickly followed, and this is the tractor tested here. Available as either two wheel drive 8520 or four-wheel drive 8540, the tractors incorporate a three-speed powershift transmission and are priced at £19,940 and £22,900 respectively.

So, what were our first impressions? Zetor’s popular image of being little more than a budget buy for the bargain bagger can be misleading, and we were to determined not to join others who have fallen into this pigeon-holing trap.

In fact, the 8540 is very much the modern tractor and does much to dispel that penny-pinching picture; bonnet styling and compact, ‘glassy’ cab are two features that particularly stand out. Admittedly, the steps are too narrow and the relationship between brake pedal and foot throttle may be ‘toe-crunchingly’ close, but these are minor detailed criticisms. In terms of overall look, this Zetor would not sit uncomfortably on the same mid-hp sofa as many of its more imageconscious
brethren.

That’s dealt with the stigma attached to the Zetor brand. But, more importantly, how does the tractor’s performance stack up against what are generally perceived to be its more up-market rivals?
