When we assessed the powershift X7.690 in 2018 it impressed … although it was slightly hampered by several simple-to-fix niggles. So, has McCormick got things sorted on the new generation X7? We test the stepless X7.624.

Rarely have we been so torn after a profi tractor test. The new McCormick X7.624 VT Drive not only looks the part with its transformer profile and dark red metallic paint, but the six-cylinder FPT block, stepless ZF TMT transmission, lift power and hydraulics all impressed us, too. But, and it’s a significant ‘but’, the cab lacks space for taller operators, with not enough leg or headroom. And that’s not the only thing: the armrest display has a growing importance, particularly in this size of tractor, yet the software within the X7’s 12-inch terminal needs to be improved in several areas — see the ‘Learning McCormick’ panel on the next page for further details.

Holding back on power…

Over the years the 6.7-litre FPT engine has proved to be a smooth-running and frugal motor in other tractor tests. According to the glossy McCormick brochure, the top model X7 is rated at 161kW/219hp and a maximum output of 169kW/230hp. Then there is the boost when travelling over 12km/hr, or during pto work, which is claimed to add an extra 7kW/10hp.

The DLG hitched our 220-hour X7.624 to the dyno to verify the claims. For rated power, 129.7kW/173.9hp reached the tail end with the motor humming at 2,180rpm — that’s only 80% of the claimed output. However, there was still some hope of achieving the maximum power. This is reached at 1,900rpm. With the boost function engaged, the needle finally stopped at 146.3kW/196.2hp.

Comparing this stat with the engine’s claimed 176kW/236hp max output, it would suggest the engine was still restrained. Nevertheless, the power curve is impressive, with a healthy 43% increase in torque with a 36% drop in speed.
