Tractor test: Valtra T191 Not even the most devoted of Valtra fans would describe the firm’s S-series high-hp range as a runaway sales success – to the extent that it has largely been left to the upper-end T models to fly the Finnish tractor flag, a role that it has now undertaken in various guises for over a decade. Here we test the latest incarnation, the Tier III 136kW/185hp Valtra T191.
The Finns have never been averse to providing their customers with the latest in tractor technology. Sigma Power and turboclutch are just two classic examples, both of which put in an appearance on the featured T191. Indeed it could well be argued that Sigma Power, which significantly boosts engine output when pto work demands it, has played a key part in allowing the medium-weight T191 and its predecessors to fill Valtra’s high-horse slot for so long. First came the 8750 back in the mid-1990s, followed by the 8950, T190 and latterly the T191, and all these models incorporate the power-boosting tech that takes them into 200hp+ territory. Downside, of course, is that they are intrinsically lighter weight machines – even the 191 scales only just over 7.5t – so they will never be true primary luggers in the 11.0t Deere 8030/Case IH Magnum mould. And that is why Valtra needs an S-series heavyweight replacement. Roll on the end of the year, then.
For now, though, we’ll stick with the T191 model which, for the record, gained its ‘1’ designation when the tractor moved to Tier III emission compliance. The engine in question is the SisuDiesel 74 CTA 4V common-rail motor, complete with four valves on each of its six cylinders. Total capacity works out at 7.4 litres, just as on the T191’s smaller sib, the T171.
