Driving impression: Valtra T202 Direct Valtra unveiled brand new transmissions for its N- and T-series tractors at the tail end of last year – a five-step semi-powershift ‘Versu’ gearbox and ‘Direct’ CVT. Stepless as this latter Direct transmission is, the tractor remains relatively straightforward to operate. Our T202 Direct driving impression explains why.

Commonality of controls is a theme that runs through Valtra’s new-for-’09 tractors. Irrespective of whether the N and T models are driven through either a CVT or semi-powershift, the operator interface is similar. In other words, he should be able to jump from one machine on to the other and still be pretty familiar with his immediate surroundings.

And this same commonality factor applies to much of the two transmissions’ design and build. Both boxes, for example, offer four working ranges that are selected at the touch of a button thanks to electrohydraulic controls.

Taking the Versu’s semi-powershift first, this design has four multi-plate clutches positioned ahead of the main gearbox. Utilising a planetary gear set, this works with the five-step powershift to give 20F/20R speeds (30F/30R with the optional creeper box) at speeds of up to 50km/hr or 40km/hr (with Eco versions that reduce engine rpm at top speed)
