AGCO is preparing to start a pilot project with humanoid robots at its baler factory in Hesston (Kansas).
Expected to start early in 2027, initial tasks for the Digit robot from Agility Robotics, will include sorting and stacking parts for key assembly and production operations.
Designed and built in North America, the Digit robot has two legs, two arms and swappable grippers that allow it to pick up and move objects weighing up to 23kg. With a maximum reach of 2.2m, cameras, sensors and AI allow it to recognize its environment and perform tasks independently.
It is not yet known how many Digits will work at the Hesston plant and how long the trial will last, but AGCO is not alone in seeking to automate repetitive and physically demanding tasks, and create more flexible, intelligent factories. Other companies that have deployed the Agility Digit include Toyota, GXO and Schaeffler.
