Not only is its name unconventional, the Xylon is altogether a different tractor. At first glance it seems to be nothing but all cab and wheels. It is, however, the only systems tractor that provides two load platforms and two linkages to carry implements or tanks. For an accurate assessment of how the Xylon performs we tested it at the DLG institute and in the field. Text by Manfred Neunaber, photos by Stefan Tovornik
When the 103kW/140hp Fendt Xylon 540, the largest model among the three Xylon tractors, arrived for the test we immediately noted down five points under the “first impressions” heading:
- The access to the Xylon’s cab is a bit steep.
- The Xylon cab is very spacious.
- The Xylon is pleasant to drive and operate.
- The Xylon looks big and is, indeed, not that manoeuvrable.
- The Xylon provides perfect forward vision.
It may seem unfair to start a tractor test with a minus point, but the steps really are steep and climbing into the cab is actually the very first impression. The steep steps, however, do make the cab much wider and provide a better view.
But what are the positive points found on the Xylon and not on other tractors? The answer is just about everything. The Xylon is the only tractor which provides two load platforms for tanks and two linkages for implements. The tractor has a top speed of 50km/h and among its other technical features are a turboclutch, a suspended front axle, four pto speeds as standard and an optional electronic hitch control (EPC) for the front linkage. There is no other tractor on the market that combines all these features. The price, however, is not modest. The Xylon costs about 10% more than the Favorit standard 514 C model, which comes with exactly the same equipment.
