USED MACHINERY: Väderstad Carrier: Ten years ago, Väderstad introduced its Carrier shallow stubble cultivator series. The design aim was to produce a tool that left a level, well-consolidated seedbed as well as delivered good trash incorporation within the ‘three inch rotting zone’. James de Havilland charts Carrier progress over the past decade, including the many mods now incorporated

Regular profi subcribers may feel a sense of déjà vu, as this is not the first time that we’ve taken a used machinery peek at the Väderstad Carrier; flick back to March 2005 and you’ll find the Swedes’ popular disc/press on p28. So why, then, are we taking a second look now? Well, there are several valid reasons, not least of which is that Väderstad has continued to make numerous detail changes to the Carrier design. The default UK spec has also evolved to typically include a set of straw harrows.

Add improved bearings, modified disc arrangements and a number of alterations to the frame and rear packer, and it very quickly emerges that there is more to buying a used Carrier than just selecting between trailed or mounted models of a certain width. Bear in mind, too, that some of these detail ‘improvements’ can also be retrofitted to existing machines, depending on their original spec. These are all points to ponder before investing.
