USED MACHINERY: Claas Quadrant 2200 and 2100 balers: Claas Quadrant 2100 and 2200 Roto Feed balers are relatively simple and well proven. As such, pre-owned examples can make a good buy, although you clearly need to know what to look for to avoid trouble. James de Havilland provides some pointers
First, let’s meet the protagonists. The Claas Quadrant 2200 debuted in 1998. It’s a six-knotter baler that pumps out a 1.20 x 0.70m size package and is well suited to both grass and straw baling. Five years later, along came the Quadrant 2100, a 0.80 x 0.70m-bale, four-knotter machine that shares essentially the same chassis as its wide-bale brother.
In fact, 2003/04 turned out to be a landmark season for Quadrant for a number of reasons. Not only did it mark the arrival of the 2100, but this year also saw the 2200 model benefit from several significant design updates most notable of which was the introduction of Claas’s pFS (power feed system). pFS is a full-width pick-up auger that sits in front of the main rotor on both 2200 and 2100 models, replacing the simple stubby side augers on the original 2200s. Along with generally aiding the intake of all crops, machines with the pFS auger system are particularly suited to grass baling, especially where the swaths are uneven and lumpy.
