Similar to hedges, branches and grass, Danish firm Greentec is growing steadily, from a dealership to an importer. It also now manufactures its own range of machines.

In last month’s profi we looked at Greentec’s Scorpion 630-6 Plus hedger. For many the Danish manufacturer will be a bit of an unknown, so to do our job properly we sat down with John Christensen to learn a little more about where the business has come from and its plans for the future.

Greentec is a relatively young company with expertise in the amenity care sector, which is its core business. So how did this come about?

To answer that and other questions, we need a history lesson from CEO and founder John Christensen. After the trained farmer attended a commercial college, he took a job in 1983 as an agricultural machinery salesman at Spedtsberg, now Greentec. He was selling Claas harvesters and Fendt tractors.

Growing with Spearhead

His initial success motivated the young man to buy 50% of the dealership seven years later. Two years after that, he and the then managing director of Spearhead met up and decided to join forces.

At the time there was funding for set-aside land across Europe, creating a big demand for wide batwing mowers to mulch the growth. Spearhead had the machines needed and, with the market booming, Greentec was founded. While Spearhead was manufacturing and marketing the range in the UK, John looked after sales in mainland Europe. The sale of Fendt and Claas machines was discontinued as a result.

In 2001, Greentec started producing its own machines. The loader-mounted branch saw was the most popular product in the firm’s attachment range. So, why start making your own hedgecutters?
