One main reason why trailed forage harvesters have fallen out of favour is because they don’t have a wide enough pick-up to cope with the wide swaths necessary for high capacity. With its latest FCT 1350 trailed machine, JF has designed a wide pick-up and has got around the transport difficulties. James de Havilland reports

Trailed forage harvesters have long played second fiddle to self-propelled machines for high capacity work. In grass, trailed machines have a number of potential limitations, not least of which is their pickup widths are too narrow to cope with large swaths.

Working on their own this is not a problem. But if a trailed machine is to be integrated into a system using self-propelled machines, their need for a narrower swath can cause complications.

JF importer, WestMac hopes to change that with its FCT 1350. Available with a choice of 2.8m or 3.0m wide pick-ups, this high capacity machine can be powered by tractors of up to 225hp for outputs about 100t/hr plus – depending upon conditions.
