Exclusive driving impression: Fendt 936 tractor Here comes Jonah Pairing 19st muscle with a 100m sprint time of 10.8secs, it’s not so many years since All-Black wing Jonah Lomu was terrorising rugby defence lines around the world. Now, meet the ag tractor equivalent: Fendt’s 936 is also all about matching power and speed – 360hp and 60km/hr. We enjoy a pre-production drive.
Flip over to the next page, quick. Now that may seem an extraordinary request at the start of an article, but please do so anyway – and study the picture over on the right-hand side.
The photo in question shows better than any words or figures the difference in stature between the new 243kW/330hp Fendt 936 and the firm’s current flag, the 221kW/300hp 930. In isolation the 936 looks relatively compact for a tractor that tops out at an awesome 265kW/360hp, but then park it next to a 930 Vario, and the full effect of Fendt’s dimensional stretches soon become apparent. Pay particular attention to the cab, for this is the Fendt response to those industry observers, profi among them, who have long been demanding more expansive operator accommodation from the marque. So much for appearance.
What about the detail? In terms of ‘what’s new’, there is certainly plenty to go at, full debut status applying to not only the cab but also the engine (Deutz TCD 2013 L06 4V) and transmission (Fendt ML260). The running gear, too, has been upgraded, with the 936 getting to ride on large diameter 215cm tyres from Michelin and Pirelli (710/85R38 and 710/75R42), which have the effect of boosting contact area by 15% over the current maximum patch. Up at 60km/hr the GVWR is 16.0t, although this climbs to 18.0t if the buyer decides to stick with the lesser 50km/hr specification. Given a 9.7t deadweight, the respective net payloads calculate out to 6.3t and 8.3t.
