Valtra’s lengthy options list allows buyers to customise their tractor. Which is great… except for second-hand punters for whom identifying the best tractor to meet their needs can be a bit of a ‘mare’. Also not helping matters is that the T0, T1, T2 and T3 production runs overlapped depending on spec. So here we add some clarity, to assist you in seeing the wood from the trees.

We are kicking things off with a bit of history. When we last took a look at buying a used 130-220hp Valtra T-series (profi 12/08) we pretty much covered the initial T0 (first generation, T120 to T190) and T1 (second generation, T121 to T191) models. Though these tractors saw various additions and spec changes, both generations stuck to the original 2002 template. Back when that magazine was published the new-for-2009 T2 (third gen, T132 to T202) had only recently been introduced and came with the option of Versu and Direct transmission options, while the entry-level Classic of the original ‘1X1’ models was dropped for the UK. This saw the semi-powershift HiTech adopt base model status.

In 2011, the T3 or fourth generation (T133 to T213) was launched with a fecompliant with Stage IIIB (Tier 4i) emission standards. To bring the T story up to date, Valtra launched what is now the T4, fifth generation (T154 to T234) Stage IV (Tier 4 Final) compliant models in 2015. This time the firm added significant developments that distance these latest tractors from their predecessors. The model range was also simplified — see profi 12/2014.w evolutionary tweaks but with the key change relating to the switch to SCR AdBlue engines
