Putting a smile on farmer faces, given the current climate, is quite a feat. But if that’s the goal, then there can be few farm experiences more guaranteed to raise a grin than riding on the stonking 595cc Yamaha Grizzly. Andrew Faulkner reports

Remember the ‘humungous’ Hum Vee doublecab pick-up? That of Gulf War fame and now, dressed in its civvies, more often seen ferrying Hollywood celebrities to and from their next charity bash. Well, if you were the proud owner of a 3.5t Hum V8 diesel and needed a similarly proportioned ATV to stuff most muscular example of its breed, the 595cc Yamaha Grizzly 600.

In terms of power, at least, the Grizzly literally stands heads and shoulders above the competition, with its nearest rivals clustering down around the 500cc mark. This 100cc margin translates into an extra 10hp and the resulting performance, not surprisingly, is quite staggering. We wound back the Grizzly throttle and clocked 60mph along a dirt track before common sense prevailed; both speedo and bike had no such reservations, and were clearly itching to pump out more.
