When Krone pulled the wraps off its baby Big X it featured impressive amounts of high-end tech normally only found on flagship choppers. Five years on, we get the low-down from an operator running one of the first pre-production machines in the UK
For years Krone was all about big forage harvesters with big power on tap. But in 2014 the German maker added another string to its foraging bow, shrinking its large-frame machines into an altogether narrower package. The original fullsize Big Xs sported an 800mm wide drum, but, to allow greater efficiency with smaller engines, the new models were nipped down to 630mm. Crucially, this size eduction didn’t correspond with a slashing of fancy options, though. That meant features like variable crop throw, automatic length of cut adjustment and biogas-grade drums were all firmly on the menu.
