Spreading or swathing? There is no quick and easy answer to what has long been the principle grass silaging question.
Moving the crop out wide carries the advantage that, given the right weather conditions, it should allow stock farms to clamp a higher dry matter, better quality material with less effluent produced. Leaving the cut crop in the row, on the other hand, involves far fewer machinery passes, is quicker, and means the downed grass is less at risk from a heavy and unexpected rain shower. Also, on boggy and damp ground the spreading/raking operations – tractor runs on cut grass – are much more likely to result in soil contamination of the crop.
